Great handgun presentation
Today's program was Gail Wood, local handgun CHL instructor who gave us a comprehensive overview of the landscape affecting the carrying of a handgun.
Gail refreshed the members and guests on the existence and import of the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, talked about the Texas Penal Code provisions affecting the ability to carry a handgun, and spoke in some detail about the Texas Castle Doctrine and "Stand Your Ground" issues and awareness. The requirements for qualifying for and obtaining a concealed carry license in Texas were also covered.
The members were slow to start in their questions to Gail -- apparently awed by the scope and depth of this critical and timely topic -- but came alive with many good questions.
An interesting fact that was a surprise to many was that as a percentage of the population Texas is actually far behind many other states in the number of CHL licensees.
