For your business or your home, do you have adequate fire extinguishers? Will they work? Should they be replaced?
Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Marshall Thomas "Tommy" Crane gave us a good overview of Fire Code Compliance and concerns for businesses. His talk is on Daybreak's YouTube Channel here, but he had a few really good tips that everyone -- business or at home -- can use:
  • Businesses must have extinguishers re-inspected each year. But it's cheaper to just buy new sometimes.
  • Residences don't have to do that.
  • Extinguishers should typically be replaced every 5-7 years.
  • So you can buy a new extinguisher for the business and rotate it home for a few years.
  • The powder in the extinguisher gets caked so you should give it a tap once in a while.
  • You can take the old extinguisher to a recycler but must remove the valve first.
Many thanks to Chief Crane for dropping by.
