On September 7, 2021, Janet Parker, Burnet County Clerk, and Vicinta Stafford, Chief Deputy, discussed the fraud alert software that the Burnet County Clerk’s Office implemented in 2020 to help protect Burnet County citizens from being victims of fraud.
In early 2020, Ms. Parker requested that Burnet County Commissioners consider contracting with Data Preservation Solutions to purchase their Property Fraud Alert program software. Property Fraud Alert is a system that automatically alerts registered citizens when there is recording activity associated with their name. Upon notification, citizens can verify the legitimacy of the activity and that the activity was not initiated by someone attempting to commit property fraud. After hearing about the program and the benefits it would offer to Burnet County citizens, the Commissioners unanimously approved of contracting with Data Preservation Solutions to provide this service to all Burnet County citizens.
Since implementing the Property Fraud Alert system, the Burnet County Clerk’s Office has taken numerous steps to inform Burnet County citizens of this valuable resource, including: mailing flyers to all Burnet County property owners, providing local title companies with flyers to provide at closings, and visiting several service organizations to discuss the program. To date, approximately 3,000 Burnet County citizens have registered to receive the free alerts.
The Property Fraud Alert program was purchased solely with record management funds. Ten dollars ($10.00) from every filing with the Burnet County Clerk’s Office is delegated to this fund. No tax dollars are used to fund this program.
